WHO IS THIS PAGE FOR
This page is for patients with a soft tissue lump that may be a lipoma, especially if it is growing, becoming more noticeable, causing discomfort, catching on clothing, or creating uncertainty about whether removal is appropriate. If you are looking for lipoma removal in Ware or private lipoma assessment near Hoddesdon or Hertford, this page explains what to expect and when consultant-led treatment may be suitable.

What is a Lipoma?
A lipoma is usually a benign fatty lump beneath the skin. Many are soft, slow-growing, and mobile when pressed. Some cause no symptoms, while others become more noticeable over time, feel uncomfortable in certain positions, catch on clothing, or create concern because the diagnosis is not completely clear. Consultant-led lipoma removal in Ware starts with proper assessment, because not every lump should be treated in exactly the same way.
When a Lipoma Should Be Assessed
Ask for assessment if the lump is increasing in size, becoming uncomfortable, affecting movement or clothing, creating cosmetic concern, or simply not feeling clearly typical. Consultant-led review is also sensible if a lump feels deeper, firmer, less mobile, or harder to define on examination.
What Happens at Your Lipoma Consultation?
Your consultation includes consultant-led examination of the lump, discussion of its size, depth, mobility, location, likely diagnosis, and whether it appears suitable for removal under local anaesthetic. You will also be advised whether straightforward removal is likely, whether enhanced assessment or ultrasound would be helpful first, and what to expect in terms of scar, recovery, and price before you decide.
When Ultrasound or Further Assessment May Be Useful
Not every lump should go straight to removal. Ultrasound can be helpful when a lump feels deeper, larger, less mobile, more difficult to define, or not entirely typical on examination. SML offers enhanced consultation with ultrasound for deeper lumps, cysts or lipomas where appropriate, helping guide diagnosis and treatment planning before any procedure goes ahead.

Superficial VS Deeper
LIPOMAS

Your consultation includes consultant-led examination of the lump, discussion of its size, depth, mobility, location, likely diagnosis, and whether it appears suitable for removal under local anaesthetic. You will also be advised whether straightforward removal is likely, whether enhanced assessment or ultrasound would be helpful first, and what to expect in terms of scar, recovery, and price before you decide.
LIPOMA REMOVAL UNDER GENERAL ANAESTHETIC
For suitable cases, lipoma removal is usually carried out under local anaesthetic in a clinical setting, meaning the area is numbed while you remain awake and can go home the same day. The lipoma is removed through a planned incision, with the approach tailored to the size, depth, and location of the lump. Every case is assessed individually, especially when the lump appears deeper or more complex.
WILL THE LUMP BE SENT FOR HISTOLOGY
Where clinically indicated, removed tissue may be sent for histology to help confirm the diagnosis. Whether this is recommended depends on the clinical assessment, the appearance of the lump, and the circumstances of removal. This is one of the advantages of consultant-led treatment in a medical setting rather than a purely cosmetic workflow.
RECOVERY, DRESSINGS & SCAR EXPECTATIONS
Most patients go home the same day after lipoma removal under local anaesthetic. Mild soreness, bruising, tightness, or swelling can be expected for a few days, depending on the size and site of the lump. Dressings and aftercare advice are provided clearly, and any scar is planned as carefully as possible around the location and size of the lipoma. While every surgical removal leaves a scar, scar appearance usually improves over time as healing settles.

LIPOMA REMOVAL PRICE GUIDE
Lipoma removal prices depend on the lump’s size, depth, site, and surgical complexity. Current guide pricing starts from £695 for suitable smaller lipomas, with larger, deeper, facial, or more complex lipomas priced higher. Standard removal planning consultation is £180, and enhanced consultation with ultrasound is £220 where deeper lump assessment is appropriate. Final pricing is confirmed after consultant assessment.
Why Patients Choose SML Instead of a Cosmetic Clinic
Some fatty lumps are straightforward. Others need more careful clinical assessment before removal is advised. SML Surgical Care offers consultant-led lipoma removal in Ware in a CQC-registered medical setting, with direct booking, local anaesthetic treatment, pricing clarity, and access to ultrasound-informed assessment where appropriate. That means decisions about diagnosis, suitability, technique, and histology are made clinically, not cosmetically.
