WHAT ARE CYSTS AND LIPOMAS?

Cysts and lipomas are common, usually harmless lumps that can grow slowly over time. While many don’t cause problems, some can become uncomfortable, infected, painful, or cosmetically concerning. 

  • Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can form under the skin

  • Lipomas are soft, fatty lumps that grow slowly and are usually painless

Both can appear on areas such as the scalp, back, arms, legs, neck, or torso.

When a Lump Should Be Assessed?

Ask for assessment if a lump is growing, painful, inflamed, discharging, catching on clothing, causing cosmetic concern, or if you are simply not confident what it is. Some lumps are straightforward. Others may need closer examination before removal is advised.
